These are a few of the things I have unearthed while going through perimenopause to get to menopause.
*Menopause is a stupid name. Pause means to stop temporarily… OMG I just this moment realized something. Menopause is technically the 12 months with no period, perimenopause is the freaking decade that leads up to it, and post menopause is after it’s all over. So I guess it is a pause, because I can tell you from experience that you can go like 4 months, and think “woo-hoo I am on my way to done” only to have the cycle start over. Freakin’ period. Perhaps then Post Menopause is a dumb name or do they just call us OLD at that point?
*Don’t throw away your tampons, pads, soft cups, or whatever until you have definitely went through the whole 12 months. A hysterectomy that sent you into menopause would be the exception to the rule.
*I’m not scared to hang my leg off the bed to sleep because the monster under the bed is not nearly as scary as the monster who lives in me.
*When it comes to a healthy pelvic floor, Kegels really have 2 parts: the contraction (squeeze & breathe out) and the release (relax & breathe in). These are both equally important and, yes, those breaths are correct.
*Another point about the pelvic floor, estradiol cream in the right dose is your friend. Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about your coochie changes.
*The weight that I gained during the last decade completely changed my center of gravity, and that has never been more obvious than when I began roller-skating again.
*Tell your uterus having kids everything. Our mothers did not, and our kids deserve all the honesty we did not get.
*Also while you are being honest with them go ahead and just apologize for any of the ways you fucked them up. Yes you did. We all do, and don’t worry they’ll fuck up their kids too. It can’t be helped. The ability to apologize is the superpower not the perfection. Validating their feelings without fear or defense will make you almost a god.
*You are still you even though your body changes. You don’t have to become an older more age appropriate adult. Color your hair purple. Get piercings. Get that tattoo. Go after that postponed dream. Listen to your music loud. Whatever makes you, you, keep doing that, or start. Love yourself, especially when the world tries to tell you that your non-baby making ass is invalid. They don’t know the magic inside of you, but you do. So let it shine or terrorize, whichever works for you.
